And that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2011\/02\/14\/110214fa_fact_wright?currentPage=all\">24,605-word piece<\/a>, penned by Lawrence Wright, painted a less than flattering picture of Scientology: Wright\u2019s sources accuse the church of closeting gay people, claim that Scientology leader David Miscavige abuses his staff and one compares the religion\u2019s spiritual teachings to mind control.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously Scientologists, intensely and unnervingly private about their organization\u2019s inner workings, were displeased by the article. But rather than following their litigious tradition \u2014 the 59-old church once tried to sue \u2018Time\u2019 for $416 million after the magazine ran their own critical article \u2014 they have spent the past six months putting together a \u2018New Yorker\u2019 send-up for their own magazine, \u2018Freedom,\u2019 which they distributed yesterday outside the magazine\u2019s Times Square office. \u2018Freedom\u2019 is almost flawless in its details.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deathandtaxesmag.com\/137498\/scientologists-publish-fake-new-yorker-after-critical-article\/\">[[[MORE]]]<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; \u2018The New Yorker\u2019 shed a bright light on Scientology when it published an article about screenwriter and\u00a0former member Paul Haggis last February.
